Greeting

As we look forward to the 21st century, environmental problems such as global warming have become a common topic for the whole of humankind. It is absolutely critical for nations, individuals, corporations such as Seiko Epson, and all other types of groups and organizations to strive to find a solution to these problems.
Surrounded by abundant nature at the heart of the Suwa region in Nagano, the headquarters of Seiko Epson is located on land overlooking Lake Suwa. Living in harmony with the region and the natural environ-ment has been deeply rooted in our corporate culture since our founda-tion.
Co-existing with nature and devel-oping in harmony with society are our firmly entrenched management principles. The practical effect of these principles is that we are work-ing towards conserving the global environment in every aspect of our corporate activities, whether it be production, product development, sales and marketing, or service.
Seiko Epson began its campaign to completely eliminate ozone layer damaging CFCs from its products in 1988 - a target we achieved in 1992.
To mark ten years since the estab-lishment of this policy, we designated 1998 as our Second Environmental Benchmark Year. We are presently reviewing the details of all our envir-onmental projects, and are further strengthening our measures by set-ting mid-range targets for each environmental theme. Strictly observ-ing laws and regulations, Seiko Epson is leading the way by setting itself high targets to contribute to solving environmental problems.
Actively seeking to publicize the results of our efforts, we ask for your opinions as we contribute towards achieving a society that co-exists with nature. That is why we have published this Environmental Report to detail our efforts towards conser-vation.
I hope you will find this report useful, and that it will help you understand the part we are playing to preserve the environment.
